[SBN] Jared McAdoo learns the value of safer crime

Say what you will about UNC defensive tackle Jared McAdoo's recent brush with the law, but for him, this is actually a behavioral upswing. Two years ago, he faced felony drug charges while still in high school. Now, just a boy gettin' his Red Ryder on!

North Carolina General Statute 14-269.2 provides that it is a Class I Felony for any person to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, any gun, rifle, pistol, or other firearm of any kind on educational property.

Carolina Blue has been informed that McAdoo was cited for having a BB gun in his possession while on UNC campus property.

You see? Improving all the time! Tune in two years from now, when McAdoo will make Chapel Hill headlines for jaywalking, or knocking the top scoop off a small child's ice cream cone.

The case of Arizona receiver Delashaun Dean, arrested in mid-June for "misconduct involving a weapon," has certainly borne out the high entertainment potential of that nebulous charge, as it turns out local law enforcement types don't take kindly to mixing deadly weapons with delicious pancakes.

[Dr. Saturday] Fizzling Rockets line up for relaunch

An absurdly premature assessment of the 2010 Toledo Rockets.

Why they might look familiar: Welcome to the former home of such pro luminaries as Bruce Gradkowski and Chester Taylor! No? Then you may recognize a mascot (right) that once consisted of a papier-maché rocket and currently resembles a covert Teletubby assassin? Or perhaps the Peace Pipe rivalry against nearby Bowling Green, established to foster harmony following a student riot in 1935 and culminating with the unsolved theft of the original trophy in 1969? Anybody?

For our money, the most gripping Toledo story remains the elaborate point-shaving scandal uncovered by federal prosecutors in 2007, highlighted by an alleged attempt by Detroit bookies to fix the 2005 GMAC Bowl, one of the most nefarious plots in gambling history. (Also one of the most inept, as the favored Rockets managed to cover the three-point spread by a mile over listless UTEP, 45-13. But still: Hardcore!)

[SBN] Devoted Florida prospect isn't a Florida prospect at all (yet)

The commitment of Rahim Cassell, a Rivals three-star linebacker, to Florida isn't particularly newsworthy, unless you're plugged in enough in Gainesville to wonder what the Gators are doing stooping below four- and five-star prospects. Oh, and except for the part that Florida hasn't exactly offered him:

This is a guy who has yet to visit Gainesville or even meet Urban Meyer. So, it’s easy to see why the Gators are not ready to accept a pledge from the kid yet. [...] Cassell may eventually become a UF commitment, but it hasn’t happened yet, even if in his mind he is committed to the Gators.

Is being committed in one's heart to a football team that might not return affections more like a common-law marriage, or like being a Twilight groupie?  In related news, I'd like to announce my intent to sign with the Miami Hurricanes, and will take that scholarship check just any time now.

[SBN] UCLA football players team up for purse theft

When is the arrest of three UCLA freshmen football players for felony theft really, really funny? When they somehow manage to rack up said felony charges by stealing a purse:

Freshmen Joshua Shirley, Paul Richardson and Shaquille Richardson [...] were arrested on Thursday by UCLA campus police.

A woman called campus police on Wednesday to report her purse missing from the Hendrick Hall dormitory storage area near the dining hall, the Associated Press reported.

Applause all around for solidarity and teamwork and whatnot, but should interested parties be concerned it took three players to snatch one handbag?

Something about Harvard that you likely didn't know, apart from the fact that it does play a small, adorable brand of football there: Many of its more prominent head-coaching positions are endowment-supported, meaning instead of saying, "Such-and-such So-and-so, Head Golf Coach," you get official titles like, "Ted Donato, The Robert D. Ziff '88 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Ice Hockey," and "Stephanie Wriede Morawski, The Costin Family Head Coach for Harvard Women's Swimming & Diving."

College football, we're frequently reminded, is a business, and we're therefore amazed this practice hasn't spread to more schools than it has, particularly private institutions. Your larger football programs, however, are less likely to be overrun by billionaires, so even though a number of the monied boosters are funneling all their donations to athletics anyway, public schools would probably have to go corporate. It's but a matter of time until we see a new Big Ten diving pool filled with delicious Ro-Tel dip, or a Sun Belt team playing on a field covered in a knee-high layer of Golden Flake potato chips.

Say, sports fan, is your local sports bar running cheeky drink specials in honor of the World Cup? Swell! It pales in comparison, however, to a joint in Arizona serving lion burgers, made, we're sure, with 100% American-born giant cats.

[Because] lion meat has a "very rich flavor" that risks being overwhelmed by add-ons, the burger is seasoned only with "a little salt and pepper and a little fresh herbs" with chipotle mayonaise served on the side. [Dr. Saturday] The rise, fall, and theoretical reascenscion of Darrell Scott

Darrell Scott should have been a blue-chip cornerstone of Dan Hawkins' teetering empire. The 6'0 California running back was a five-star prospect, Rivals' top-ranked player at his position, and the No. 6 overall recruit in the nation, and following a brief dalliance with Texas, he was headed to Boulder thanks to the presence on the team of his uncle, Josh Smith. Scott was arguably the most celebrated get in school history -- and now, two years later, he's crowing on Facebook at the prospect of sitting out a full year, then competing for playing time at South Florida.
